The Silver Lining – to be released July 10th

Monday, 28 June 2010

The Silver Lining is a fan sequel to the Kings Quest series that’s been in production since 2002, rather than just being a remake of a previous game, The Silver Lining is represented as an unofficial follow on from King’s Quest 8.

Originally titled King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has a Silver Lining, the title has gone through a number of changes including being renamed to The Silver Lining following cease and desist notices from both Vivendi Software and more recently Activision, who now hold the IP for the Sierra franchise.

In fact up until a few days ago, it appeared that The Silver Lining was never going to see the light of day, having recently been shut down by Activision over IP infringement.

In response to this shut down, fans who had been following the development launched an online petition lobbying for the release of the title, just how much of an impact this petition has had is unknown, but it does appear that Activision have had a rapid change of heart in deciding to reach an agreement with Phoenix Online and fans have been credited for their efforts towards this.

The crux of the story line in The Silver Lining follows King Graham on a quest to lift a curse placed on his children, Alexander and Rosella. The story itself is essentially canon from main King’s Quest mythology but will involve some familiar characters and locations to help set the stage for the tale.

After playing the public demo released back in 2006, I have to say I was quite impressed with the quality and presentation of the engine, If this standard manages to carry through in the final release then half the battle will already be won, the real challenge however, will be for Phoenix Studios to deliver on the puzzles and interactive story line.

I have high hopes!
